FAQs
Q: How do we begin working together?
A: The best way to start is with a discovery call, which you can schedule by contacting us through our website, email, or social channels.
This is your chance to ask us any and all questions about our process (filling in any gaps from the website and our guide).
We’ll then schedule a planning session. During this meeting, we'll discuss your project goals, timeline, and budget, whilst making early design recommendations and suggestions. If we're a good fit, we'll prepare a detailed proposal outlining our recommended services, deliverables, timeline, and fees.
Once the proposal is signed and the initial deposit is paid, we'll schedule your project kickoff meeting and get started on the design together.
Q: Is there a minimum project size or budget you work with?
A: No! We love all design challenges, big and small! We’ve developed a services list which caters to a variety of client needs and project sizes, and we can also create a custom package to suit your specific needs too..
For smaller projects and budgets, our planning session and design blueprint might be more appropriate, whilst you’ll get maximum benefits and guidance with our full scope kitchen, joinery and interior design packages. During our discovery call, we can discuss whether our services align with your project scope and budget.
GETTING STARTED
Q: What information should we prepare before our first meeting?
A: To make our planning session as productive as possible, we’d love you to gather:
Building plans or existing floor plans (if you have them)
Inspiration images
A preliminary budget range
A list of your functional needs and priorities
Your ideal timeline
Any building constraints you're aware of.
The more information you can share, the more effective our planning session will be!
OUR DESIGN PROCESS
Q: What does your full design process look like from start to finish?
A: Our design process typically follows five key steps:
1) Planning - understanding your vision and needs
2) Concept - creating a look and feel - through mood-boards and materials palette - to align with your vision.
3) Design development - focusing on form and function. Layout, space planning and refining material selections.
4) Documentation - creating detailed technical drawings and specifications.
5) Project handover - the design package is complete and ready for quoting and construction.
You’ll have an opportunity to provide feedback throughout the process and we won’t proceed to the next stage without your approval.
Q: How do you gather information about our style preferences and needs?
A: We officially kick off your project with a design meeting - where we dive deep into your unique style, taste and needs.
We’ll ask you to complete a detailed questionnaire that helps us understand your design priorities and how you use your space, and we’ll also request the sharing of inspiration images and Pinterest boards too.
Our early design process involves all the fun stuff and nitty, gritty stuff too – looking at lifestyle, functionality, aesthetic preferences, and budgets.
And if you have no idea, don’t worry – our process is designed to fine-tune a look and feel that’s very YOU (and we reckon once you see the 3D visualisations, you’ll be sure we’re on the money!).
Q: If I use Mosh Home for design work, will Mosh Joinery build my cabinetry?
We get a real kick out of guiding you through your joinery journey from concept to completion. But whilst we’re firm believers in the ‘one team, one dream’ mantra, the nature of timelines and project location mean it’s not always the right fit.
Whilst your plans will always be checked off by our joinery team, they’re yours to shop and find the right contractor to complete the project.
Q: Can you recommend other trades to complete my project?
Whilst we don’t provide project management for builds or renovations, we work with some of the best in the local business community and we’re always happy to provide referrals to help you find the right team to complete your project.
Q: Do I need to order appliances or will you look after that?
We encourage and we suggest ordering appliances as early as possible, as changing appliances during the design process can significantly impact the design and it also ensures no unnecessary delays if the appliances aren’t in stock.
If you haven’t ordered and have no idea what to purchase yet, we’ll happily provide some advice and steer you in the right direction, whilst using some basic models to kickstart the concept design.
Q: Do you help with the purchase of furniture and fittings too?
A: We sure do! And because we’re a generous bunch, we’re happy to pass on our trade discounts, which can mean massive savings for our clients on major projects. So whilst you’re investing in design work, you’ll be saving money on furniture - win-win!
If you’d like us to handle the ordering of these items, we’ll charge a small fee (at our hourly rate) to account for tracking and delivery coordination (and we’ll be transparent about the pricing).
Q: What level of documentation do you provide for contractors?
A: Our plans are designed with you and your build team in mind, with comprehensive documentation (approved by our joinery team) including detailed elevations, technical drawings and finishes schedules. They should be simple enough to clearly communicate the design to you and your build team, whilst limiting confusion and hiccups along the way.
Our documentation includes measurements, material specifications, product details, finishes and hardware selections. Please make sure you review the documentation at all stages, and know that we’re always available to you and your build team to answer any design queries which will inevitably pop up along the way.
Q: Do you provide 3D renders or other visualisation tools?
A: Yes, we sure do! This is the fun part that you’ll love reviewing, and showing off to friends and family to help them share your vision for your new space.
Our 3D renders will help you truly visualise the final design – and you’ll wonder how anyone builds or renovates without them! We’ll plug in details like finishes, materials and lighting to give you as accurate an impression of the space as possible.
Q: Will you help with the location and selection of lighting and GPOs too?
Absolutely! We always make recommendations for the placement of lighting or relevant GPOs in our designs. These will be detailed in the construction drawings and we will allow for such items in construction.
Please note, these are suggestions only and we still recommend that all selections should be discussed with appropriate trades before proceeding. Always review the supplied plans to ensure you’re happy with the placement of these prior to construction.
Q: Do I need joinery plans?
Yes! When it comes to renovating and building, plans prevent a sub-par performance. Plus, they’re essential - you will need plans to get a quote and complete the build.
Our difference? Process, outcome and experience. Most joinery firms won’t have a qualified designer AND joiner working together on your design project. So you’d likely approach a cabinetry company with some inspiration images and a rough sketch with the view that they’ll create some production drawings for you.
With all due respect, designing without a highly professional and skilled team is super risky. It would ultimately take a lot more work on your behalf to achieve a result that you MIGHT be satisfied with. We’re all about professional, elevated outcomes, achieved by a dedicated team of friendly and experienced pros.
Q: Do you select other finishes too?
Finishes are our jam! As part of the joinery design process, we’ll help you select elements including cabinetry, benchtops, handles, splashbacks, flooring, tiles, upholstery, tapware and lighting - you name it! We’ll also add these to your 3D images so you can get a clear idea of your new space.
WORKING TOGETHER
Q: I don’t live locally. Can we still work together?
A: Sure thing! We welcome clients from around Australia and abroad and will tailor your design package to ensure we’re able to give you the Mosh Home experience, wherever you live.
Working together remotely is absolutely feasible, but it will require some additional input from you (for example, photos and measurements if you’re renovating). But don’t stress, we’ll happily guide you through what we need, when we need it.
Q: How do you typically communicate with clients throughout the project?
A: We’ll keep you updated along the way through regular check-ins - typically via email for key project updates and video calls or in-person meetings for design meetings and material selections.
We’ll also give you access to your project folder via Dropbox, where you can access your design documents.
At all other times, we are happy to communicate by phone and email and typically reply within 24 business hours.
Q: How will we review and approve designs?
A: We’ll send through design updates at different stages:
1) Moodboard and concept. (The look and feel we’re trying to achieve and 3D images of key areas).
2) Design development (where we continue developing the 3D models and refine your materials palette).
3) Technical drawings and finishes schedule (where we finalise the elevations for construction and confirm finishes across the project).
We’ll always make sure you review materials before making decisions, Plus, all major design directions require your written approval before we proceed to the next phase.
Q: How do you handle design revisions or feedback? What happens if we're not satisfied with a design direction?
A: We’re here to please! If you're not completely happy with a design direction, please be honest - we're absolutely committed to finding design solutions that you love and work for you. Being open and transparent allows us to discuss your concerns and understand what isn't working for you so we can revise our approach.
Typically, our process and design fee estimate accounts for one revision per design phase, but we can make further changes as you like (though it’s worth keeping in mind this will impact time and design spend).
Happy clients, happy designers!
Q: Will you coordinate directly with architects, builders, or other tradespeople?
A: Yes, we’ll happily collaborate with your entire project team, coordinating directly with architects, builders, and specialty trades to ensure design details are properly executed. One team, one dream!
We can attend site meetings as needed and are available to answer technical questions and provide clarification on design documentation during construction. Please note, any site visit during construction will be charged at an hourly rate.
Q: Who owns the design documents after project completion?
A: While we retain copyright of the design work itself, you receive a license to use the design documents for the intended project. You'll have access to all final documentation for your project, including plans, specifications, and digital files. These materials are provided for your reference and for use by contractors working on the project.
TIMING AND SCHEDULING
Q: How long does a typical project take from first meeting to final documentation?
A: Project timelines vary based on multiple factors, including scope and complexity. However, as a rule of thumb, we’d suggest smaller designs (like kitchens) typically require 6-8 weeks from start to documentation completion, while whole-house renovations AND builds usually take 12-16 weeks.
We'll provide a timeline during our proposal phase after understanding your specific project requirements.
Looking to speed things up? We’ll always work to meet your deadline, but please approach the process with realistic expectations - good things take time. We also strongly recommend a hands-on, collaborative approach - prompt replies and selections at the client end can omit unnecessary delays too!
It’s important to discuss your timeline needs during our planning session and we'll be transparent about what's possible.
Q: Do you offer site visits during construction/installation?
A: Sure! We understand you might like support during the implementation phase, in which case we’re happy to offer site visits at an hourly fee, ensuring everything comes together as planned.
We’re also happy to work with your team and are available via phone and email to answer contractor questions and make real-time adjustments when needed.
Q: What input and decisions will you need from us and when?
A: We believe a big part of our job is to save you time and energy - cutting the stress and overwhelm through solid design guidance.
However, we’ll need your input and feedback throughout the process - including information about your lifestyle, preferences and budget.
Most of this is conducted through questionnaires and during meetings. You will be required to approve materials and finishes and getting to view these in person is a crucial part of the decision-making process.
If you’re out of reach for an extended period of time during the design process, please let us know so we can plan accordingly.
Q: How frequently will we meet during the design process?
A: Typically, we schedule a design meeting at the start of the project, another meeting for review of the design concept, and a final page-turner before handover (completion of the design). We are happy to handle these remotely too.
Between these milestones, we’ll keep in touch through email updates and lock in additional meetings when needed to address specific design elements or decisions.
FEES AND BUDGETING
Q: How do you structure your design fees?
A: Our design estimate and final fee is based on an hourly rate. This flexible model ensures fair, honest and transparent communication and pricing for our clients – so you’ll only pay for work you need, no more and no less.
We’ll provide you with a design estimate before we start the project so you have a fair idea of the overall project cost, and we’ll offer regular updates about hours so there are no surprises.
Q: How much does your design work cost?
A: It all depends on the project scope. Giving us a clear idea of your budget to begin with helps us recommend the right design service for you.
Whilst we need to conduct a planning session to provide an accurate scope and design budget estimate, our kitchen design packages typically start at around $4,000, and our whole home design packages start at around $10,000.
Q: Is there a charge for the initial consultation?
A: Yes, as you would expect with any professional service, we charge a fee for our first official meeting – the planning session.
These sessions typically last 60 minutes. This fee covers our time preparing for the meeting, the consultation itself and our ‘follow-up’ guide.
We don’t do things half-baked and if we’re asking you to commit an hour of your time to work with us, you’ll walk away with:
Fresh, expert ideas on how to transform your space.
Clearly defined next steps.
An accurate budget for design works.
We reckon it’s the ideal launching pad for any home project.
Q: What are your payment terms and schedule?
A: Our projects are paid in instalments that align with project milestones. This includes a booking deposit (50%) to secure your place in our schedule, with progress payments due at the start of key design phases and completion of the project.
For full terms and conditions, please refer to our website and design contract.
Q: How do you help ensure we stay within our established budget?
A: Keeping your budget top of mind is a core part of our action plan. It’s our mission to make sure:
you’re not paying for designs that don’t work
your design falls close to your specified budget
Whilst few people like talking about a budget, being open and honest about your investment helps us find a design outcome you love at a cost that you’re comfortable with.
Our joinery team will review our design work at each phase, highlighting any potential budget impacts of design decisions.
Q: Do you help identify areas where we can save or where we should invest more?
A: Absolutely. We’re all about ‘bang for buck’, knowing where to invest and where to pull back to ensure we stretch your budget for maximum impact.
We’re also passionate about using cost-effective materials well (trust us, good design and craftsmanship pay dividends).
Our experience helps you make those tough decisions about which elements deserve a splurge and where you can save without sacrificing the look, feel and function you’re wanting to achieve.
