Charming Surf Shack
Chris and Heather Hodgetts’ Gold Coast home is a rare gem - a thoughtfully renovated beach shack nestled behind the dunes in Palm Beach.
The couple added a second storey to the quaint 1950s shack prior to starting a family, but after some years in the home, decided to extend the original kitchen, which was timeworn and in need of replacement.
The small alteration project increased the footprint of the kitchen and meant a complete reconfiguration of the kitchen and adjacent living space. Chris and Heather engaged Mosh Joinery to complete the design and installation of their new kitchen, including a banquette dining area.
The custom joinery needed to reflect the home’s charming past and cope with the rigours of daily life with three young boys in tow, along with the steady stream of family and friends who frequent the home regularly.
We sat down with Heather to chat about the process all the way from concept design, to installation, to finally living in the space.
What was your vision for the space? Did you have a design in mind?
Our home was built in the 1950s and is one of the last original shacks along this strip, so we’re passionate about maintaining and preserving its history and character as much as possible.
We loved the look of our old kitchen with vintage lemon cabinetry, so we wanted to make sure the renovation was sensitive to the original design in colour and form.
What are your favourite features of the design?
There are so many! I love the integrated appliances which make everything look seamless and keep the focus on the cabinetry.
We love the colour and durability of the Laminex benchtop and cabinets. The material is so easy to keep clean - which is so helpful living by the beach and having three young boys at home.
The long peninsula bench has become the heart of our home - we use it for breakfast, lunch and dinner as well as board games in the evening. Plus, it doubles as a great servery for food when we’re entertaining.
The overall look and feel of the kitchen are spot on. The olive green and ply palette is timeless but fun, and we love the thoughtful details like the matching green edging along the cut-outs and the custom handles on the integrated appliances.
How satisfied were you with the outcome?
Working with the MOSH team was so easy. They were friendly and always excellent with advice and feedback.
We felt like their approach was super-personalised and they took time to get to know what we needed and wanted.
There’s nothing we would change. We’ve had such positive feedback, and when friends or family visit, the kitchen is always a talking point.
It’s made our family home that much better, and it’s so appreciated and valued.
